Penalty points in 2025 - how to cash in on traffic offences?

Punkty Karne 2025 – Co Zmieni Się w Nowym Roku?

The penalty points system in Poland is undergoing further changes. The year 2025 will bring significant modifications to the rules on penalty points and the fine tariff. It is worth getting to know the upcoming regulations now to avoid unpleasant surprises on the road.

New Penalty Point System in 2025

From 17 September 2023, the rule was introduced that penalty points are erased 12 months after the payment of the fine, rather than after the receipt of the fine. This change remains valid also in 2025. This is important information for all drivers, who need to be aware that paying the fine quickly will speed up the points erasure process.

Penalty Point Limits for Drivers

Differential penalty point limits still apply in 2025:

  • 24 points for experienced drivers (with a licence for more than a year)
  • 20 points for novice drivers (with a driving licence for less than a year)

Exceeding the penalty point limit will still result in the loss of a driving licence. For many drivers, this may mean having to retake their test.

Tariff of Penalties 2025

The 2025 fine tariff maintains high rates for the most serious offences. The highest fines are provided for:

  • Wyprzedzanie na przejściu dla pieszych – do 1500 zł i 15 punktów karnych
  • Przekroczenie prędkości o ponad 50 km/h – do 2500 zł i 15 punktów karnych
  • Przejazd na czerwonym świetle – do 500 zł i 15 punktów karnych

How soon do penalty points expire?

Penalty points are removed 12 months after the payment of the fine. This is a change introduced in 2023 and will continue in 2025. It is worth remembering that:

  1. Punkty nie znikają od razu po opłaceniu mandatu – trzeba odczekać pełny rok
  2. The system removes the oldest penalty points automatically
  3. Failure to pay the fine halts the points erasure process

Differences for Drivers with Different Seniority

The penalty point system in 2025 will continue to differentiate between drivers by experience:

  • Kierowcy posiadający prawo jazdy dłużej niż rok – limit 24 punktów
  • Kierowcy posiadający prawo jazdy krócej niż rok – limit 20 punktów

How to check the number of penalty points in 2025?

In 2025, drivers will have several ways to check their number of penalty points:

Online methods

  • Via your gov.pl profile using your Trusted Profile
  • In the mCitizen application
  • Through the Central Register of Vehicles and Drivers (CEPiK)

Check with the Office

You can still check the number of penalty points in:

  • Police station
  • County office
  • Provincial Road Traffic Centre

Can Penalty Point Erasure be Accelerated?

W 2025 roku sytuacja z kursami redukującymi punkty karne pozostaje bez zmian – zostały one zniesione dla większości kierowców. Obecnie możliwości przyspieszenia kasowania punktów są ograniczone:

  1. Professional drivers can receive training once every 6 months to reduce penalty points by 6
  2. For ordinary drivers, the only way is to wait 12 months after paying the fine

Impact of Penalty Points on Third Party Liability Insurance

The number of penalty points in 2025 will continue to have an indirect impact on OC premiums. Although insurers do not have direct access to penalty point information, they can take into account the history of damage and accidents, which are often linked to infringements.

How do Penalty Points affect the Premium?

  • Frequent offences can lead to accidents
  • Accident history is visible to insurers
  • Increased risk results in higher third party liability premiums

The most common traffic offences and related points

Drivers who break traffic rules should be aware of the most common offences for which penalty points are charged:

  • Speeding (from 1 to 15 points, depending on the severity of the overrun)
  • Incorrect behaviour towards pedestrians (8 to 15 points)
  • Phone use while driving (12 points)
  • Incorrect overtaking (5 to 15 points)
  • Driving after alcohol (maximum points limit)

Summary of Changes to the Penalty Point System

The penalty point system in 2025 will retain the main changes introduced in 2022-2023:

  • Penalty points are cleared 12 months after payment of the fine
  • Tougher fine scales are maintained
  • Penalty point limits remain at 20/24 points
  • No reduction in points through courses for ordinary drivers

The changes aim to improve road safety through more effective enforcement and education of road users. For drivers, this means being more careful and complying with the rules to avoid losing their licence.

It is a good idea to check your penalty points and keep track of them so that you do not exceed the limit. The best way to avoid problems is, of course, to obey the rules of the road, which will contribute to the safety of all road users.
