Juvenile driver - a guide for parents and teenagers

Obtaining a driving licence for a young driver is an important moment in the life of every teenager and their parents. Polish law allows those under the age of 18 to drive, but there are specific rules and restrictions that are worth knowing before you start learning to drive.

Age requirements for young driver

Driving licence categories

A young driver can obtain a category AM licence as early as the age of 14 (mopeds up to 50 cm³), category A1 at 16 (motorbikes up to 125 cm³) and category B at 17. The most important category for most young people is category B, allowing them to drive cars personal.

Parental consent

A key requirement is the written consent of both parents or legal guardians. Without this consent, no juvenile can start driving lessons or take the test. Consent must be in writing and evidenced by signatures.

Process for obtaining a driving licence

Medical and psychological examinations

A young driver must undergo a standard medical examination and, in addition, a psychological examination. The latter are only compulsory for those under the age of 18 and are designed to assess mental maturity for driving.

Learning at a driving school

Like adult drivers, juveniles must complete a course at a driving school comprising 30 theoretical hours and a minimum of 30 practical hours. The instructor pays particular attention to the development of a responsible attitude behind the wheel.

Restrictions for a young driver

Driver-guardian

The main restriction is the obligation to drive only under the supervision of a driver-guardian. This person must have driving licence Category B for at least 5 years, be not subject to a court order prohibiting driving and agree to perform this function.

Time constraints

A young driver is only allowed to drive between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. Night driving is completely forbidden in order to increase safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

Speed limits

Special speed limits apply: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h outside built-up areas and 100 km/h on motorways and motorways. This is 10-40 km/h less than for adult drivers.

Insurance aspects

Higher contributions

Insuring a young driver is much more expensive due to the statistically higher risk of damage. Insurance companies treat this group as high risk, which translates into higher premiums.

Additional requirements

Some insurance companies may require additional safeguards or restrictions in the insurance policy for a young driver. It is worth carefully comparing quotes from different insurers.

Slawa Rent and young drivers

Rental policy

At Slawa Rent in Wadowice We understand the challenges associated with young drivers. In accordance with Polish law and safety policy, we do not hire cars to persons under the age of 18. This restriction is due to insurance requirements and safety considerations.

Support for families

However, we do offer support for families of young drivers. Parents can rent a car in their name to allow their child to learn to drive under the supervision of an authorised guardian. We also provide professional advice on choosing the right vehicle.

Preparing for the future

We encourage young drivers to contact us before they turn 18. We can outline our vehicle hire requirements by young drivers and prepare a customised offer for the moment of coming of age.

Advice for parents

Learning support

It is crucial to actively support the young driver in the learning process. Regular discussions about safety, joint analysis of traffic situations and setting a good example behind the wheel are the foundations of responsible driving.

Monitoring progress

It is a good idea to regularly check your progress and communicate with your driving school instructor. The young driver needs time to develop the right habits and road reactions.

Transition to adulthood

When a young driver reaches the age of 18, he or she automatically becomes an adult driver, but for the first year the restrictions specific to novice drivers still apply. However, the time restrictions and the requirement to drive under the supervision of a guardian are removed.

The young driver is a period of learning responsibility and developing skills. The right approach by parents, driving schools and car rental companies supports the safe development of young road users.
